PeeWee A2 Purple Stars win Canada 150 contest and trip to Ottawa

Congratulations to the PeeWee A2 Purple Stars for winning the HOCKEY on the HILL contest and a trip to Ottawa to play hockey over the holidays in the Bell Capital Cup hockey tournament in a special Canada 150 Division!

The essay they submitted:

We are the Winnipeg East Stars PeeWee A2 Purple team, and we are a team as diverse as the city we represent!  We are of Black, Norwegian, Inuit, Metis, French, Ukrainian, Irish, Polish, Greek, Swedish and Scottish descent…..but most importantly…we are all Canadians and we are all, Stars!

We are a female hockey team from the great City of Winnipeg.  We play hockey for the love of the game, for the community activities we do as a team, for the lifelong friendships and of course, for the dressing room dance parties!  Not only do we work hard on the ice playing the game we love, we are also out representing in our community.  As a team, this season we gathered at the Manitoba Parliament to remember and honour those who served and continue to serve so that we can live in peace and freedom. Additionally, as a team, we collected used sporting equipment in order to provide opportunities for those who want to play the great game of hockey, but who otherwise would not be able to afford to play.  We are not only Stars on the rink, we are Stars in our community! Leading, learning, caring!

Whether on the ice, in the community or in school, we are working to become tomorrow’s scientists, teachers, police officers, military personnel and leaders. We’re not just working to become great hockey players, we’re working to become great team players – on the ice, in our schools and our community…we are working on becoming GREAT CANADIANS!

Great job ladies!

Bantam AA Saints are Finalists at 2017 WickFest in Calgary

After a much smoother flight to Calgary than the Peewee AA team enjoyed, the girls got busy exploring Calgary and playing some hockey. Highlights of the weekend included not getting the correct rental vehicles, which led to playing hockey bag Tetris over and over again just to get to the rink. The girls also got to visit the Calgary Tower for a nice lunch, did some glow bowling and got in a little Black Friday shopping.

Congratulations go out to the Bantam AA Saints, who were finalists in the Bantam Elite-2 Division of the 2017 WickFest Tournament in Calgary this past weekend. After going 3-1 in the round robin, they played North Shore Avalanche in an evenly matched final that was decided in a shootout.

You represented Winnipeg East Female Hockey with class and grace. Well done ladies!

Peewee AA Saints are Finalists at 2017 WickFest in Calgary

The PW Saints survived the flight into Calgary, with some pretty awesome turbulence that our pilot rated an 8/10. It made for 20 minutes of roller coaster action as we approached Calgary and WickFest.

Once on the ground, after celebrating being alive, the Saints got into playing hockey in the Tier 1-A group which had them playing teams from across Canada: North Shore Avalanche from BC, Saskatoon Comet Fury from SK, Fundy Selects from NS, and Saint Albert Hit from AB.

Having played 4 games in 72 hours, travelling to Banff and taking in a University of Manitoba Female Bisons game, the Saints qualified for the finals by defeating the Saskatoon team Sunday morning. With only a few hours downtime to recharge, the Saints team battled hard until the buzzer of the finals, but ultimately fell to the Fundy Bay Subway Select team from Nova Scotia.
